Criteria

It's kind of like a quiz. To see what baby names you can come up with that fit my criteria.

1. Traditional but not too popular. And not made up. And it has to be spelled normally, like you could find it on a license plate keychain.

2. Our first two have biblical names that are two syllables. That works, but is not a requirement. Obviously we are not doing the same first initial for everyone; that's not my style.

3. It has to work with our last name and our other kids names. I've had perfect strangers advise me not to name any of our children Richard. I think I'm smart enough to know that. And I'm even going to make sure their initials don't spell something weird.

4. It has to be gender specific. That rules out Taylor and Jordan (and many others).

5. And I have to like it. So even though the name Jared fits the criteria, it makes me think of the Subway guy.

Everyone has a right to name their kid whatever they want, so of course I don't intend to offend anyone. These are my personal preferences for my kids.

Can you think of baby names that fit these criteria? Hopefully you will think of some that I haven't thought of yet. And vote on the sidebar on what you think it will be, a boy or a girl. We will probably find out the baby's gender some time after Christmas.

I really can't help. I think each person has to figure out names they like on their own. You have a lot of criteria. I'd never think of Jared the Subway guy when I think of a Jared, for example. I'd think of people I knew by each name, though, so that does affect me.

Anyway, I don't want to tell you my favorite names because I may use them myself some day... :)

I have always liked the names Ginny and Beth. I could not convince my husband to select either one, so you ended up as Jennifer Elizabeth, which was as close as I could get. I have always liked Megan too.
Now that I think about it, Jen is a lot better nickname than Gin. One of my criteria was that girls names had to have a nickname. I think it came about because one year when I filled out my personal information sheet for Methodist summer camp, the form had a blank for nickname and I had nothing to write down. In those days, I did not know that Nell was a nickname for Ellen or that Peggy and Meg or Maggie were nicknames for Margaret or I might have suddenly changed my name to Nell or Meg.

That's really ironic, Mom. I grew up disliking that I was called by a nickname and not by my "real" name. At least from age 10 or so on, I don't know about before then. I intend to make sure my kids have names that are not also shortened as nicknames! Or at least I'll never call them by the nicknames (such as Daniel always being Daniel). I don't like nicknames.

Interesting comments. I am not opposed to nicknames. I like giving my kids the option to pick. I personally prefer Samuel to Sam, but it's up to him what he wants people to call him when he gets older. On the other hand I really like the idea of naming a girl Margaret, but calling her by a nickname and not the full name.
