I'm trying to understand my toddler who doesn't seem to understand negative consequences. Please impart your wisdom in my behalf and tell me what I'm missing!
Hey, she's only a year old. As long as you are consistent, she'll eventually get it. YOU are smart to get it. A lot of parents don't. Their kids cry for something and they give in, so the kids do learn that the way to get something is to cry for it. I have students in middle school who don't understand about consequences.
I remember staying home from the beach one very hot beautiful day because the day before, my kids wouldn't cooperate about coming home when it was time. I had said "we can't come back tomorrow if you don't come cooperate when it's time to go home," so I really had to stick with what I said. Everybody really learned the lesson.
